In this guide to the best theory test app, we’ll compare the features and review the handy apps for learning driving theory and the hazard perception test.
The Official DVSA theory test bundle app includes both the theory test and hazard perception sections of the test. The two can be purchased as separate apps but it’s more expensive than the bundle. The app includes a PDF document of the official Highway Code and as such learners can save a little money without buying a hard copy of the Highway Code.
We found the app receives regular updates with updates to the questions, highway code and audio.
The app receives excellent and frequent reviews on the App Store. On Google Play the app gets lots of good reviews but be advised there are some reports of the Hazard Perception having issues with crashing.
The DVSA apps are created by the DVSA which happen to be the same people who set the tests, which is quite reassuring knowing that the revision questions are as close as possible to the actual test.
Available on the App Store and as a Windows or Mac DVD on Amazon.
Driving Test Success is the most popular theory test app other than the official DVSA app, claiming 11 million users. The 4 in 1 bundle includes the theory test app, highway code, hazard perception and road signs. As with the DVSA app, it’s cheaper to get the bundle than individual apps.
The app loses a point in our review due to having 4 separate apps vs the bundles with less apps. However, we really like the ability to use the app offline because it can be used on a flight or train journey without wifi access.
Although we found the app receives updates, they appear to be not very regular.
As with the DVSA app, the Driving Test Success app receives many highly rates reviews on the app store. In the app description, the maker claims to have over 6000 5 star reviews. On Google Play, the app receives mostly good reviews. We liked seeing that the developer responds to most of the reviews and attempts to make contact if the reviewer had any issues.
Driving Test Success is published by Focus Multimedia, a company that publishes a range of computer games and software.
The two apps are excellent but for smartphones the best theory test app has to be the official DVSA app because it is created by the same people who set the tests.
The difference between the two is very minor and both apps are highly recommended. At the end of the day, either of these apps will provide the means for you to learn the driving theory.
Our recommendations for the best theory test app on different platforms are:
We couldn’t find any other apps that are better than the two aforementioned apps. The DVSA app and Driving test Success are miles ahead of the field and so there aren’t any others worth mentioning.
